In Shinrone, Deanery Furniture stands as a living testament to heritage. Trevor Dean recalls summers spent alongside his father, a cabinet maker who returned from the UK to restore Emo and Cloghan Castles. Those projects were where Trevor and his brother Mark absorbed the patience and precision of carpentry.

What began as supplying furniture to shops gradually transformed into a direct relationship with clients. Families from Dublin, Limerick, and beyond travelled to Shinrone, drawn by the promise of bespoke pieces crafted from hardwoods, finished with oils, waxes, or hand-painted detail. “We actually make it from scratch,” Trevor explains, giving clients the freedom to design exactly what they want. Tradition remains at the heart of the business, even as technology reshapes the industry.

For Trevor, Shinrone’s greatness lies in its people. “They’ll all pull together and they won’t see anyone stuck,” he says. That spirit shines brightest on days of celebration, like when Shinrone’s hurling team triumphed, sparking joy across generations.

Today, fibre optic broadband has brought new opportunities, allowing businesses like Deanery Furniture to thrive online. Looking forward, Trevor sees expansion: new families settling, drawn by the countryside’s calm and the village’s proximity to larger towns.

While some worry about limited prospects for young people, Trevor believes trades and apprenticeships offer real prospects. Deanery Furniture itself is seeking apprentices, and his own children are pursuing trades like plumbing. Rural life may demand travel, but opportunities exist.

Shinrone is a village with excellent schools, strong community programs, and a supportive environment for families, it offers a foundation for growth. “It’s a lovely little village and a nice place to raise a family,” Trevor reflects.

Deanery Furniture is a story of heritage carried forward, of community spirit embodied in wood and craft. In Shinrone, tradition and progress meet, Trevor and Mark continue to adapt, blending traditional methods with modern tools while staying true to their roots. Their vision is not only to create furniture but to preserve a way of life. In doing so, Deanery Furniture ensures that the legacy of craftsmanship will inspire generations to come.
